EMD Piston 8459704 for EMD engine parts
Key Features & Engineering Excellence
1. Advanced Alloy Construction
Cast from high-tensile alloy gray iron, this piston offers a superior strength-to-weight ratio. The material is specifically chosen for its ability to maintain structural rigidity under the high peak firing pressures (PFP) characteristic of EMD two-stroke cycles.
2. Phosphate Coating (Anti-Scuffing)
The entire piston surface is treated with a Manganese Phosphate coating. This serves two critical purposes:
Break-in Protection: Provides dry lubrication during the critical initial start-up and break-in period.
Corrosion Resistance: Protects the component against oxidation during storage and transport.
3. Precision Machined Ring Grooves
The ring belt area is precision-machined to exacting tolerances. This ensures:
Gas Tightness: Optimal seating of the piston rings to minimize blow-by and maximize compression.
Oil Control: Efficient scraping and distribution of lubricating oil to prevent carbon buildup and excessive oil consumption.
4. Thermal Management & Durability
Engineered to work in tandem with the piston carrier and oil cooling system, the internal geometry allows for rapid heat dissipation from the piston crown to the cooling oil, preventing thermal cracking and extending the intervals between overhauls.
